Heavy snow hits North Staffordshire

HEAVY snow has been falling across Stoke-on-Trent and the wider Staffordshire area this morning and into the afternoon.

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning, with as much as 15 centimetres (around six inches) expected to fall throughout the day.

More than 200 schools have closed across the region and there is widespread disruption on the roads, especially minor ones with several routes becoming impassable.

Gritters from all the major authorities have been out in a bid to keep main routes moving.

Winds have also strengthened, resulting in blizzard conditions, especially over high ground.

The snow is expected to last into the afternoon.
