Ahead of the evening rush hour there were warnings of standing water on the D-road, particularly around Etruria.
Train lines have also been affected by the downpours.
East Midland Trains had to provide alternative transport for passengers after the company was forced to suspend services between Derby, Stoke-on-Trent and Crewe because of flooding in the Uttoxeter area at around 3pm this afternoon.
Virgin Trains and Arriva Trains Wales were also forced to suspend operations around Crewe, due to flooding near the station.
Staffordshire Police have issued a safety warning to motorists, urging them to slow down and keep a greater distance betweem themselves and the vehicle ahead.
So far, no major incidents of flooding have been reported but the Environment Agency has issued warnings for low lying areas in the county, particularly land next to the River Tame near Tamworth.

“Long sunny summers, relentless dry days running into weeks on end and then into months, without a single drop of rain -with the reservoirs almost dried up altogether..... and water bans -with not a sign of rain in the near future..... no baths, sharing showers, only fried, not boiled eggs, flushing the toilet only -when absolutely necessary.... Ban on all canal traffic -Locks unworkable, brown lawns and cricket fields....
Will we ever see 1976 again?”
