Forty-year-old Khalid Malik, who lives in nearby Chatham Street, was at the scene soon after the incident.

He said: "I was going to get something out of my car when I saw loads of flashing lights.

"I went to see what had happened and saw the car had crashed through the railings.

"The railings had come away and it looked like the car had rolled into the wall of the shop.

"It didn't look like it hit the wall that hard but the bottom of the car was a bit smashed up.

"I was quite surprised when I found out what happened because there are never many accidents like that around here.

"I saw the man when he was in the ambulance, he looked about 40 or 50.

"People are saying he had a heart attack. I just hope he is alright."

Office worker Jenna Goodwin, who works at Albion business communication centre, in Howard Place, said: "I was at work when I heard about what had happened.

"I saw the police and ambulance and could see that the car had come crashing through the railings of the shop next door.

"The police were there for about an hour clearing up and the council came out later on to block up the hole in the railings."

Amjid Wazir, of Croston Street, Shelton, who represents Hanley Park and Shelton on Stoke-on-Trent City Council, said: "Since that roundabout has been put in place we haven't had any accidents up there.

"I just hope that the driver of the car is okay and that he makes a full recovery"

Staff at Stoke Gas, who rushed to the aid of the driver, declined to speak to The Sentinel yesterday.

A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said: "We were called to reports of a gold Land Rover Discovery which had gone over the roundabout on Stoke Road and into the wall of a shop at around 1.30pm yesterday.

"The driver is believed to have fallen ill at the wheel of his car.

"The road was cleared within an hour and the Land Rover was recovered.

"The driver was then taken to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire by ambulance."

“Well done to the emergency services for not only responding quickly but for clearing up so quickly afterwards, especially on such a busy stretch of road. Hope the driver recovers.”
