MADAM , – In 1952, my older daughter wanted to join a group. Her two friends at school had joined the Brownies but it was too far for her to go.

A Girls' Guildry had started at St John's Church in Liverpool Road, where the Magistrates' Court is. I took my two daughters to the meeting in February of that year and had to stay. I knew the officers. In July, before closing for the summer break, an officer asked me to become an officer myself, as she was having a baby. After passing written tests, I was enrolled as an officer in St George's Church in 1953, to 1st Newcastle Girls' Guildry.

Then came the amalgamation in 1965 – The Girls' Guildry, Scotland, The Girls' Brigade of Ireland, and The Girls' Life Brigade, England.

The new badge incorporated the lamp of the Guildry, the torch and the crown.

During 1965, families were being moved to Clayton council estate. Six girls left in one week and we were down to two girls. Miss Garthwaite (officer) and I decided to close the company. During the meeting of officers of North Staffs companies, I said I didn't know whether to retire or resign.

Mrs Pearce, the chairman, said: "Mrs Trafford, would you like another officer?"

"Yes please," said Mrs Trafford.

So, in October, 1965, I joined the Higherland Girls' Brigade, which automatically had become 1st Newcastle. And so began 20 years of service. I retired in 1985, and I have so many memories of church and mayor's parades, concerts, badge work, and of so many girls passing through.

I'm 96 years old and I wonder if there is a retired officer older than I am?
