Now officers are keen to build up a picture of what Mr Hammond did in the days leading up to his death, after revealing the last recorded sighting was a visit to his family the previous Sunday.
They are hoping to hear from friends of Mr Hammond as they try to learn more about him.
A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: "We are keen to hear from people who may have known Mr Hammond in order to establish his movements leading up to his death."
It has not yet been confirmed how long Hr Hammond had been dead before he was discovered. However some neighbours have speculated it could have been a number of days.
Items and samples taken from the flat will now be analysed at specialist police facilities. CCTV from the area is also being studied.
A Wainwright Walk resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "The police have been in and out for the past few days.
"I think the man had been dead for a few days before he was found. It was a shame, I think he just got mixed up with the wrong kind of people."
Non-aligned councillor Paul Breeze, who represents Birches Head and Central Forest Park, said: "It is an incident which has shocked a lot of people in the area."
Mr Breeze, who is also chairman of Hanley One Residents' Association, added: "I hope that friends of the man do come forward and help the police with their inquiries.
"Once more information has been gathered it will hopefully give a degree of closure to his family and provide some answers to them and also the people living in the area."
Police are urging anyone with any information to contact them on 101, quoting incident number 135 of February 15.
