Despite less than brilliant weather conditions, the City Centre was packed with people of all ages waiting to see the Christmas Lights being turned on.  Stoke City FC Manager, Tony Pulis and local sporting legend Imran Sherwani had the honours of pushing the button to light up the streets of the city.

The main stage for the night, was hosted by Signal 1 and the crowds, who were in their thousands, were treated to entertainment from Britain's Got Talent's Loveable Rogues and local band Six Towns.  Six Towns, who recently recieved news that they had made the top twenty in the MTV Brand New Unsigned Award greeted the crowds with 'Ow'at Stoke' showing they are very much still attached to their roots.  They warmed up the crowds magnificently with a fantastic reception.  Likewise, a lot of screams from people of all ages echoed around Fountain Square as Loveable Rogues entertained despite the rain.

After the music, Tony Pulis, Imran Sherwani and the main man himself Santa Claus began a countdown and as they pressed down the button, fireworks lit up the sky and the streets of Hanley shone brightly with the City's Christmas Lights.  Not even the weather could dampen this event.

Paul, a member of staff at the Lloyds TSB in Hanley explained what a great event it had been. 'It is nice to see everyone out and this is such a good boost for the city centre'.  As well as the entertainment on stage, there was plenty more to see and do. Funfair rides for the younger visitors added to the excitement, Trentham Brass Band played Christmas songs and there were many refreshment stalls dotted around including a roast chestnut stall adding to the Christmassy feeling. Sandra Stewart of Bucknall,  was visiting with her daughter, she said 'There is so much to do here, there really is something for everybody.  Yes, the weather hasn't been great but I don't think it has affected it.  It's great to see everybody out smiling, laughing and enjoying themselves'.  She added 'It's not just the youngsters who love events like this either'.
