HMV assistant was rude to me

I HAVE been a loyal customer of HMV for a number of years now, and have used the Potteries Centre branch in Hanley on a number of occasions.

I have also spent a considerable amount of money in there.

However, I went in last Friday to buy a couple of CDs as I had a gift voucher for my birthday.

I also asked for a DVD that wasn't on the shelf, so I asked the assistant if it was available. He said to me, quite abruptly, that it was due in, so I asked if I could order it.

He said no, and gave some feeble excuse.

I was getting a bit annoyed by his attitude, as I was quite calm, and asked if there was another shop I could order it from. He quite firmly said no again. I knew full well there was one.

I thought, 'This guy needs a lesson in customer service'. Unfortunately I didn't get his name.

I went to The Arcade record shop in Hanley, and the assistant couldn't do enough for me, and I was treated with a bit of respect – a totally different attitude to HMV.

He ordered me the DVD and said it will take about a week to come. I would recommend the shop to anyone and think I shall be going there in future.

It just seemed as if the assistant in HMV wasn't bothered if I was there or not.

I can say I am not surprised that a lot of these shops are closing down, as they seem to be losing sight of what the customer wants, with members of staff treating us with indifference.

“Mr. Jeffrey must be a very sad person without any insight into anything much and very little brain. If that is to rude for you, I frankly don't care. If the stu*** not on display, they must not have it and they are not takeing instore orders as they would not want disappoint you becouse they can not guarantee they can get it. If you don't want human interaction, use the Internet.”

“I'm shocked that this is what you call 'rude'. You are either a terrible writer who can't express a point or you are really struggling for news.

Upon research, HMV are going through a transitional period regarding their suppliers. The staff are told - for the majority of items - not to place specific customer orders as they can't guarantee (or even really estimate) a delivery time. This may not have been articulated to you clearly at the time.

I would love to have seen someone to record this transaction and really see how rude you were to him. As someone who has spent time working in the retail sector I am aware of the horrible way in which many customers treat employees. An awful sense of superiority with which people speak to members of the retail sector, forgetting that they are human beings, is commonplace.

I have a feeling you are one of these people. I wanted to use another word. I wanted to word this comment completely differently, but I had a feeling this was the only way the 'journalist' may respect my opinion.”

“We see shop assistants in many shops that can be rude, however unless this person was extremely rude to you and I can't see he or she was even though you say he told you abruptly, he just told you that it wasn't in an that he could not order it. How's that being rude? Moreover, why did you ask if there was another shop you could get it from? You knew there was so why ask????

Shop assistants along with people at food outlets such as food pubs can be quite rude at times and it's these people that we should be complaining about. The person in question from what I and others can see was doing a job confronted by a customer that was being an obnoxious twerp just because he could.”

“As someone that works in HMV, it sounds like they told you they couldn't order it... because we can't. Where is the poor customer service in that from that person? So it was not a feeble excuse. Ever thought that the person that served you was having a bad day? Maybe some personal issues. We are all human and can't be 100% on top of our game every day, that doesn't reflect HMV as a whole does it? Why don't you go and care about something worth while writing about? This is nonsense at it's highest. Also, is there another HMV in your area? Why would he recommend another company? That's not his job.”

“the best of it is, from what I can gather the company aren't taking orders in store at the moment, only online I think? So the assistant wasn't lying or giving you a feeble excuse; as it's a country wide thing another store wouldn't have been able to help either.

To be fair if you said some of the drivel about "how you're not surprised they're shops are shutting" or made out you didn't believe them I'm not surprised they didn't really have much time for you. They were far politer than I would have been quite frankly.

I wish the sum of my lifes problems was moaning about folk that work in shops all day. It must be nice to have nothing bigger on my plate.”

“Signs of a very frustrated & demoralized assistant of a retailer in crisis, and running out of banking credits, which makes them unfortunately too risky for their traditional suppliers, yet they are having borrow more and sell off crowd jewels in order to raise money to money to invest develop a future of profitable high-street retailing!”
