COUNCIL managers have reassured motorists that gritting teams are on standby as the recent cold snap continues.

Staff at Stoke-on-Trent City Council continue to monitor the forecast around the clock and will make a judgment on when to send the gritting vehicles out.

Councillor Ruth Rosenau, cabinet member for regeneration, planning and transportation, said: "I would urge motorists to be extra vigilant while travelling around the city now that the temperature has dropped. The gritting teams are ready to go at a moment's notice, treating the 125 miles that make up our main roads as well as frequently used bus routes and those that lead to ambulance, fire and police stations along with hospitals and all of the city's secondary schools.

"We will be keeping a very close eye on the weather and planning our schedule meticulously to ensure that Stoke-on-Trent's roads are kept as safe as they can be during adverse conditions and that residents are kept on the move."
