Use water Hippos in your toilets – these are made from durable heavy gauge polyethylene, and open up into a box shape when installed. The Hippo happily sits in the water underneath the large cistern float. When the toilet is flushed, the water confined within the Hippo is the volume saved. The Hippo also has a small hole which acts as a relief valve, allowing a slow circulation of the water to prevent stagnation and evaporation.

Organically-manage your garden – don't use pesticides or other sprays, and refrain from using a hose pipe. If you grow your own fruit, vegetables and herbs or buy local produce you can reduce your carbon emissions as transportation costs are eradicated. Also, create Bug Hotels so plant-friendly insects survive the winter, and leave dying plants in the soil to provide a useful food source for birds.

Use eco-friendly products from companies including Ecover, Bio-D and Faith in Nature.

Use energy saving light bulbs, and eco-balls in your washing machine to prevent a build-up of residue from sulphate-based washing powder.

Take a shower instead of a bath as it uses much less water, and don't leave the tap on while brushing your teeth.
