Golf: Prodigy Ryan to challenge for world title in America
PRODIGY Ryan Chadwick is planning the golf trip of a lifetime – at the tender age of 10.
The youngster from Blythe Bridge, with a handicap of 24, has qualified for the final of the Callaway World Junior Championships in San Diego, California, in July.
He did so by winning a qualifying round over a shortened 18-hole par-60 course at Whittlebury, Northamptonshire, with a score of 69.
Ryan is one of 24 youngsters who will be flying the flag for the British Junior Tour on U.S. soil.
The tour stages events all over the country for talented youngsters aged from five to 17 at top-class venues.
Ryan plays at weekends and during holidays from Newcastle under Lyme School and, while he has been successful on tour, the national qualifier at Whittlebury was the big one.
Now the Chadwick family are looking forward to supporting young Ryan in the U.S, where they will combine the event with a holiday.
Ryan has been playing golf since he was aged four and followed his father Nick by joining Trentham Golf Club a year ago.
At Trentham he has come under the coaching wing of club professional Shane Owen, who has been impressed with his potential and attitude.
Owen said: "Ryan is my star junior. For his age he is a fantastic striker of the ball.
"His swing is solid and he practices a lot.
"As he gets older he will become a much better player because he is very much focused on golf. I cannot fault his attitude and dedication.
"He has a good future ahead of him, but I am not looking to take all the credit because he had some help before he joined Trentham."
Leek's Harry Fearn is also off to the U.S, to take part in the Wee Wonders World Championships at Pinehurst, North Carolina, in August.
The son of Leek club professional Fred Fearn qualified by winning the national title for children aged seven to eight at St Andrews last year.
WOMEN'S European Tour professional Joanne Morley will entertain lady members of Wychwood Park Golf Club, near Nantwich, on March 27.
The Sale-based player, who was non-playing assistant captain in last year's Solheim Cup team, will give a talk on her golfing career.
The event, from 4pm until 6pm, also includes a fashion show of women's golf wear. Tickets, costing £10, include refreshments.
For details, call Wychwood Park lady captain Elaine Stubbs on 07816 867573.
