Golf: Brave Terry overcomes disability to win national title
MOST people find golf a difficult game to play when they have all their faculties.
So disabled player Terry Adnams is the toast of Barlaston after bringing home a national title.
The 51-year-old company director, from Trentham, contested the Society of One-Arm Golfers' England and Wales Championship in Oxfordshire and triumphed by a point.
"I feel very proud of my achievement," said Adnams, who lost his right arm in a car accident 17 years ago.
"It was the society's last meeting of the season and, as winner, I have qualified for the world championships in Ireland next June."
The event was held over 27 holes of the Frilford Heath championship course in Abingdon.
Adnams, who totalled 50 points, added: "I was ahead of the field with 35 points after 18 holes, but there were players who could beat me who were out in the afternoon. I had a bit of wait in the clubhouse until the results were in."
Adnams played soccer for Shamblers and Hanford before losing his arm, but took his time before trying his hand at golf.
He said: "I was a member at Oakhill Bowling Club.
"I did not bowl, but they also had a golf society which I eventually joined.
"It was quite difficult and I was a bit anxious.
"Although I held the club with my left hand, I played as a right-hander by swinging the club across my body.
"It was a couple of years before I played my first game because I did not feel comfortable with people watching me, even at the driving range, so I kept putting it off."
But as his confidence grew Adnams joined Barlaston some 10 years ago and has played in club competitions off his handicap of 24. He won the winter doubles this year with Brent Hemmings.
This year, he was invited to join the Society of One-Arm Golfers and made an immediate impact on his debut.
"I was quite nervous at the start playing against rivals with eight and nine handicaps, but now I feel more confident.
"Sports come naturally to me and I play snooker one-handed," said Adnams, a director of CMR Demolition at Sneyd Hill.
TWO lady members at Leek Golf Club have reeled off first, second and third places in county competitions this year.
Jenny Cordon and Paula Parkes won the Staffs Autumn foursomes at Oxley Park, took second place in the county am-am tournament with Pip Nadin and Jill Snelson, and finished third in the four ball, better ball event at Leek.
