Staff at a museum are celebrating after receiving a glowing report from an undercover assessor from VisitEngland.

Gladstone Pottery Museum has been described as 'excellent' and confirmed as a Quality Assured Visitor Attraction by the country's national tourist board.

The Longton museum is inspected annually as part of the Visitor Attraction Quality Assurance Scheme, which sees attractions marked on how they deal with phone calls, email enquiries and an on-site inspection by an unidentified mystery shopper. The museum's website and its use of social media also came under the spotlight of the assessor.

Last year the museum was described as 'generally excellent' and this year staff are delighted to have gone one better.

The recent inspection found the museum 'provides an overall excellent quality experience'.

The report continued: 'The level of interpretation used within the museum was excellent, with a variety of techniques used and activities to keep children entertained.

"All of the bottle ovens are now open and an additional video room had been added. All of the staff were very friendly, helpful and informative, which made a huge difference to the overall understanding and enjoyment of the visit.'

Councillor Mark Meredith, cabinet member for economic development, culture and sport, said: "This is fantastic news for the museum and the city as a whole. We have some fantastic tourist attractions in our city and it is only right that they receive national recognition.

"To achieve such a high standard in a tough, national inspection is testament to the hard work the staff at Gladstone put in to make the visitor experience brilliant."

The museum is open between 10am and 4pm daily and has a lively programme of events. For more information on the museum call 01782 237777, visit www.stokemuseums.org.uk or search for the museum on Facebook.
