A HALLOWEEN walk has been diverted after a vicar complained about the group walking through a graveyard.

Steve Osbourne, vicar at The United Benefice of Caverswall, Weston Coyney and Dilhorne, appealed to walkers in the paranormal group to re-think their route on the social media site Facebook.

He said: "Those of you planning to include Caverswall Churchyard in a Halloween ghost walk.

"I would like to say as the Vicar that I think it is highly disrespectful to the families of those who are deceased and buried at Caverswall that you are planning to include the churchyard.

"I have had people contacting me who are very upset at the prospect of the ghost walk in Caverswall Churchyard, and I appeal to have some respect for others and not to visit the church yard."

The Parallel Worlds Halloween ghost walk is due to take place tonight at 11pm.

It was originally planned to take in the hollows and churchyard in Caverswall, but will now be re-routed to respect the wishes of the vicar.

Organiser Marie Naughton said: "A decision has been made not to enter the church yard out of respect, as the church will be open for prayer.

"The walk will still be going ahead, but it will not include the churchyard.

"We do not want to be disrespectful to anyone."

But the vicar's objections created a backlash on Facebook, with many angry about the decision to divert.

One group member wrote: "I think it's disgusting that a lady who wants to arrange a completely free event is being looked down on and made to look like a fool."

I was referring to the group member in the article who wrote "I think it's disgusting that a lady who wants to arrange a completely free event is being looked down on and made to look like a fool."”

“Credit to the chap. As much as I am sure the paranormal group would show a high level of respect, I am not sure I would like the idea of them walking around /on the graves of my loved one. So well done to the Vicar for raising the issue, and well done to the group for being so compliant and supportive.”

“Why is it so important for some people to show disrespect and disregard for other peoples feelings?”
