Gateway to Stoke-on-Trent set for £1.2m overhaul
CRUMBLING pavements and pothole-ridden streets used by thousands of students and commuters are to be repaired in a £1.2 million scheme.
Stoke-on-Trent City Council will restore road surfaces and pavements on 16 streets in Shelton as part of a three-year road investment plan.

SPLASHING THE CASH: Just one of the 16 streets due to benefit from the city council investment.
It is designed to complement Staffordshire University's £12 million investment to redevelop its Shelton campus, as well as the council's £4 million plan to transform the area around Stoke station and create an express link to Hanley.
The Sentinel revealed last week how Department for Transport figures show a fifth of the city's roads are deteriorating and need work, while a further three per cent are rated 'red' and in 'poor' condition.

Work will include pothole repairs, resurfacing of roads and footpaths, and new raised tarmac platforms to replace damaged speed bumps.
Vic Rawlinson, chairman of Shelton Residents' Association, said: "Some of the roads are horrendous with potholes. We've had bad winters and it has caused a lot of problems.
"They have patched them up in the past, but that doesn't last very long. Anything they can do to help improve Shelton is very welcome."
Roads set for resurfacing include Boughey Road and Avenue Road, which runs alongside Hanley Park, and will involve the replacement of the raised brick 'patchworks' to slow motorists down at junctions.
Deteriorating cobbled speed bumps, such as those at the junction of Thornton Road and Boughey Road, will be removed or replaced.
Residents and businesses will also be consulted on whether some speed bumps are still suitable.
Councillor Amjid Wazir, member for Hanley Park and Shelton, has worked on developing the plans.
He said: "It's excellent news. The roads need improvements, especially when you come out of the train station.
"That is the gateway to the city and we would like to improve that to give a better impression to business people and other visitors to the city.
"We're going through a hard recession with a lot of cuts from the Government, but we're doing our best to improve the area."
The city council is using the Shelton area as a pilot for new road investment policies which should see a further £1.2 million invested in each of the next two financial years.
It is moving away from its "worst first" approach to road repairs by targeting investment in specific areas.
Highways officials believe continuing to spend the money on an ad hoc basis will only provide a short-term solution, while targeted investment will mean a greater overall proportion of the city's roads are brought up to standard.
The next two areas to receive investment have not been revealed.
But the council said they will include at least one further residential area where regeneration is a "key theme" and other "economically important" roadways.
Pete Price, assistant director of technical services, said: "In addition to the physical works, there will be additional positives. These include positive links with the university and improved relations with business owners.
"The project seeks to improve highway condition in areas of economic interest and critical regeneration areas.
"It will improve perceptions of the area, particularly for potential future long-term city residents, such as students."

“the roads and pavement s in the stoke on trent area are shockingly bad. why just tart up the pavement s near the new university buildings? look at the rest of the town its scruffy and the council have allowed it to get this way. theyve had the money so why has it not been done the council leaders in stioke on trent have screwed this place for far too long and wasted good money .potholes on every single street you go down that seem to just be left year after year.”

“Keep on putting the claims in and they might get the message. But the important thing to do is to report any defects to the appropriate authority.Which i can only say,in my experiance as been acted on.”

“Think about putting 20 ft high curtains both sides of the railway track all the way from Harecastle down to the incinerator, so the illusion about to be created at Stoke Station isn't spoiled?”
