A LABOUR councillor has called for an MP to receive a civic honour.

Mark Fisher announced last week he is stepping down as Labour's MP for Stoke-on-Trent Central for health reasons.

The 64-year-old, who has held the seat since 1983, recently underwent brain surgery and has been told to take time out to recuperate.

Councillor Adrian Knapper has called on Stoke-on-Trent City Council to make Mr Fisher a Freeman of the city.

He has submitted a formal request to chief executive John van de Laarschot.

He said: "Mark Fisher has given 27 years of his life to the service of the people of this city. It's only right the city honours Mark for his long service as Member of Parliament by giving him this honour."

“I would wish Mr Fisher all the best in his retirement, but I found him unhelpful as an MP. He had to be chased up all the time for follow up - and often did not reply to correspondence unless reminded that a reply was awaited. I do not suppose he was any different to any other MP.”
