Footballer's dedicated mum is nurse at Douglas Macmillan clinic
STOKE City star Andy Wilkinson has put his weight behind the campaign to bring more awareness of the condition.
While not a sufferer himself, the Premier League defender has seen it first hand for many years – because his mum, Carolyn, is a nurse working at the Douglas Macmillan Lymphoedema clinic at Blurton.
He said: "I am so proud of mum for working so hard for these poor people with this terrible illness.
"She is so dedicated to the job and their welfare that she is always bringing her work home at night - that's where I've got to know about it.
"It must be a real trial for people to have these symptoms and not know what is causing them."
Carolyn said: "It is very rewarding work when we can help people and then seeing the treatment finally making a difference to their lives.
"But I'm also very proud of Andrew and his achievements. We knew he was something special when he started kicking a ball when he was tiny.
"It's good he is behind our awareness campaign particularly because some sufferers can be quite young and he may be one of their role models."
