Football helps bind our city
I T was fitting that Stoke City included The Sentinel in part of its celebrations to mark the club's 150th anniversary. There aren't many organisations which have been in existence longer than the Potters but this newspaper is one of them. Stoke's captain Ryan Shawcross toured the The Sentinel's base and met staff, some of whom are regulars at The Britannia Stadium. As part of the visit, fans and former players were asked to share their memories of the club by including them in Stoke City's 150th anniversary memory book. Picking out a favourite is a tough task given the success of recent years. And the older you are the bigger the memory pool. All fans will have their favourite but who can forget the 1972 League Cup victory, winning promotion at Notts County in the last minute of the last game of the season, beating Plymouth to win promotion under Lou Macari and going up in the play-off final at Cardiff. Or beating Wolves and Reading on final day dramas to stave off relegation.
T he list goes on and it is the same for every football fan. Port Vale fans will also have a memory bank of great moments from down the years. And are doubtlessly making space for more at the start of the Smurthwaite and Wildes era. Memories can never be taken away and are what bind loyal fans to their clubs. Stoke City have been in existence since 1863 while Port Vale were formed in 1876. During that time both clubs have given great enjoyment to fans and done much to help promote the wider North Staffordshire area. Both clubs inspire a sense of loyalty and form a vital part of the fabric of the city where they both play. Some people say the importance of football is often overstated. But the longevity of both clubs means they must be doing something right and long may that continue.
