LEEK Town boss Wayne Johnson has been unsuccessful in his attempts to reinforce his struggling squad.

Johnson had targeted Liam Shotton (Kidsgrove), Dave MacPherson (Witton Albion) and Mark Fitton (Congleton Town) with official approaches, but drew a blank on all three.

He said: "It is going to be difficult to prise players away from clubs who are doing well to a team not doing so well, but it has not been for the lack of trying.

"I have also spoken to John Rudge, at Stoke City, and Glyn Chamberlain, at Macclesfield, and recently inquired about Anthony Malbon, who had a spell with us last season from Port Vale."

The only new face is James Brough from Ball Haye Green, who was on the bench against Chester in the President's Cup defeat on Tuesday.

The good news for Johnson is the expected return of Andy Taylor for the trip to Rainworth Miners Welfare tomorrow.

Nobody has missed defender Taylor more than the manager, who has played in the last couple of games without his skipper alongside.

Johnson, aged 36, said: "It has been hard work because there has been very little respite.

"Because the ball is not sticking up front it is constantly coming back at us so there is no time for a breather at the back or in midfield at the moment.

"We must hold the ball up better so that the midfield lads can get up in support them.

"We are certainly defending a lot and we must be looking to put teams under more pressure."

Leek lost 3-2 at home to Rainworth only four games ago so will have some idea of what is in store.

But Blues may be encouraged by the fact Rainworth have yet to score a league goal at home.
