KIDSGROVE Athletic chalked up their third straight win to move into a mid-table position.

The 3-0 victory over Rainworth Miners Welfare at the Seddon Stadium means they have scored in each of their last 22 league games and are the fifth highest scorers in the division.

"John Johnston had a cracking game and was unlucky not to get a hat-trick, which he probably deserved. When we are in this form we want the games to come quickly, but unfortunately the vagaries of the fixture list mean that we don't play now for 10 days when we go to King's Lynn for a Tuesday night game."

Grove began the match well and almost scored in the fifth minute when a Dan Skelton pile-driver was saved by Allesandro Barcherini in the visitors' goal.

Johnston's mazy runs were testing the Rainworth defence and Alan Nagington went close with a shot just over the bar.

Rainworth almost took the lead in the 27th minute when Jared Holmes sent Kieran Wells clear, only for his shot to be tipped round the post by the fingertips of Danny Read.

It was the Grove though, who went in front 11 minutes before the break.

Johnston skipped past a couple of challenges to burst into the area and as Barcherini advanced he slotted the ball past him from an acute angle.

Skelton set up Karl Espley with a chance to make it 2-0, only for him to be denied by a last-ditch tackle by Ryan Goward.

Johnston beat three men before shooting wide early in the second period, but was on hand to set up Grove's second goal in the 54th minute.

He picked the ball up on the left and made space for himself before finding Espley free in the box and he flicked the ball home for his second goal for the club since his December move from Stafford Rangers.

Grove dominated the play after that and made it 3-0 in the 84th minute.

A fine passing move ended with former Crewe Alex and Stafford Rangers midfielder Kevin Street finding Johnston in the area and he produced a cool finish to end the scoring for the afternoon.

LEEK Town suffered a 2-0 defeat on their first ever visit to second-placed King's Lynn Town.

Kings had the better of the early exchanges with Dan Jacob and Shane Tolley both hitting efforts wide of the target.

The home side took the lead on the half-hour mark when a Steve Spriggs cross found Jacob just inside the area and he swept the ball home to mark his debut with a goal.

Two minutes before the break the promotion chasers made it 2-0.

A quickly-taken free-kick by Richard Bunting found Tolley in space and he fired the ball into the net.

Ninety seconds into the second half Leek had their best chance of the game when Ant Danylyk found a bit of space, but he shot just wide.

Tolley almost extended Kings' lead when he took the ball past the Leek keeper, but then hit the inside of the post from two yards.

The results leave the Blues in tenth place in the table while King's Lynn are now unbeaten in 12 games.

NEWCASTLE Town's scheduled visit to the world's oldest club, Sheffield FC, fell foul of the wet weather as two days of heavy rain left their pitch covered in standing water.
