NEWCASTLE Town continued their imperious march towards the Vodkat North West Counties League Premier Division title last night with a 2-0 victory over Glossop North End at the Lyme Valley Stadium.

It was Newcastle's 19th victory from 19 league games since the start of the season and leaves them 15 points clear at the top from New Mills.

Both goals came in the first half, Chris Budrys chipping the Glossop keeper from 25 yards out on 22 minutes, before Chris Boast half-volleyed home on 33 minutes when the ball broke to him from a corner.

The Glossop keeper also made good saves from Budrys and Ryan Dicker as Newcastle sought to killed the game off before the break.

The pace of the game dropped after half-time with very few other chances being created, but that didn't stop the Newcastle fans present giving their side a standing ovation at the final whistle.

Leek Town won their UniBond League Cup third round tie at Premier Division side Worksop 2-1, but only after extra time.

Leek took the lead on 19 minutes when Nick Ward headed home a free-kick from Matt Johnson, but then saw Dan Cope and Paul McMahon squander chances when one-on-one with the home keeper.

Leek were punished on 43 minutes when their keeper, Steve Hodgson, was booked for a foul just outside the arena and Ben Tomlinson drove home the resulting free kick.

There were chances at both end during the second half, and Leek escaped when defender Chris Fullalove cleared a Worksop effort off his goal-line.

But Leek were not to be denied, and the tie was settled on 113 minutes when substitute Leon Ashman scored from close range after a cross from Steve Brannan.
