SICK people with suspected swine flu are being urged not to attend sport or leisure events in North Staffordshire.

NHS North Staffordshire is asking people to stay at home if they have any of the typical symptoms of flu to help prevent the spread of the virus.

These symptoms include a sudden fever or cough, or headaches, tiredness, chills, aching muscles, diarrhoea, sore throat or sneezing.

Dr John Chesworth, medical director of NHS North Staffordshire, said: "We are just at the start of the football season and this is the peak time of year for festivals and local community events so we are asking people to help stop the spread of swine flu.

"We are urging anyone who feels that they might have swine flu or who has any of the above symptoms, particularly if associated with a temperature, to stay at home and stay away from social gatherings such as football matches, barbecues, fairs and community events.

"I know people may find it disappointing to have to miss an event, or a family gathering, but I would ask them to think of other people."

People with suspected swine flu are being asked to call the swine flu information line on 0800 1513 513.
