PLANS have been submitted to build a sheltered housing complex in an urban village.

Gladman Care Homes wants to create 65 flats for the over-55s on the site of the former Londis filling station, High Street, Wolstanton.

Permission has previously been granted for two similar developments in the area.

The Planning Inspectorate overturned Newcastle Borough Council's decision to block plans for 76 flats on the site in 2007.

And in 2008, the council gave permission for 56 flats.

Wolstanton residents had objected to earlier schemes.

Gladman says the new application "improves" on the previous proposals.

The flats will be contained within a two and three-storey U-shaped building and there will be 26 parking spaces.

Council planners will consider the proposals in the coming weeks.
