FAMILY and friends were gathering today to say their goodbyes to a soldier who died in Afghanistan.

The funeral of Gunner Zak Cusack, from 4th Regiment Royal Artillery, was due to take place at noon today at St Saviour's Church, Smallthorne.

Zak, aged 20, from Smallthorne, died on May 26 during an exchange of small arms fire with insurgent forces in an area around Enezai Village.

The funeral, with full military honours, was due to be led by the Reverend Richard Grigson, vicar of Smallthorne, with Padre Anne Freestone, chaplain to the military, 4th Regt Royal Artillery.

The funeral was to be followed by a private interment at Burslem Cemetery with a firing party.
