Farewell to a Potteries hero
Y OU may never have known his name. But the chances are you were very familiar with his face. For several years, John Leese was the smiling Tin Can Man, who collected money for the Douglas Macmillan Hospice at the Potteries Shopping Centre and at Morrison's supermarket, on Festival Park. No-one is quite certain how much John raised during a fund-raising marathon which started in the early 1990s. However it was well over one third of a million pounds – most of it in coins. Ill health forced John to hang up his tin can in 2010. This week he passed away peacefully. John would have been 87 years old this Valentine's Day. It was his own Valentine, his loving wife Olwen, who first started his 17 years of fund-raising for Douglas Macmillan. When Olwen was dying, back in 1990, John pledged to her that he would collect money for the hospice staff who had nursed her during her illness. John was obviously a man of his word.
T HE pinnacle of John's fund-raising career was the MBE which he received from Her Majesty The Queen in 2008. In all, John was invited to Buckingham Palace on three separate occasions. His achievements were legendary way beyond The Potteries and his home in Werrington. Yet there are many local dignitaries and community leaders who will never forget John's stunning – and truly moving – entry onto the stage at the Sentinel Heroes award evening, back in 2007. John, who was clearly not well at the time, shuffled onto the stage to a rapturous, standing ovation from everyone in the room. He collected his Editor's Special Award – then announced he would be placing his £1,000 prize straight into his tin can! That was the mark of the man. For John Leese was a hugely generous and selfless human being, who will be sorely missed by everyone who ever put a penny in his can.
