Football fans say it doesn't matter if players are gay - survey
NINE out of ten football fans think homophobia has no place in the game, according to a new survey.
More than 2,000 fans have so far responded to an online poll launched by Staffordshire University.

And interim findings suggest that supporters are far more open to gay players than suspected.
Results so far show that 93 per cent of fans believe homophobia has no place in football.
Sixty per cent want gay players to be honest about their sexuality.
And more than 90 per cent think the only thing that matters in football is how a player plays.
Researchers behind the study believe the results are significant in light of a £40,000 fine imposed on rugby league club Castleford for the homophobic chants of its fans towards openly gay player Gareth Thomas.
Professor of Culture Media and Sport, Ellis Cashmore said: "I think we could safely say that many of our participants would welcome action to educate fans rather than punish them."
He hoped the findings would help the Football Association and Professional Players' Association pursue gay equality in a sport that was "out of sync with other major world sports".

“I think that given some of the flipant points posted on here, I was right in my first post.
Why is it that people feel it acceptable to make flippant comments on this subject - would they if we were talking about race?”

“LJ, The depth of your argument and your selective response clearly demonstrates your limited grasp of national issues. I suggest you look up the concept of "opportunity cost" perhaps that will help your understanding the cost of doing one thing at the expense of another. Thanks for your assessment though - I will go now and blindly clutch some more straws :-)”

“Er, hosting costs did not increase as a result of this survey, nor did any other costs associated with the course. Why are you bothered about the costs anyway? Are you one of the fee-paying students actually funding the course, or just an interfering local busybody who shooting his mouth off despite being in posession of more assumptions than facts?
Science, engineering, languages and economics courses dominate the Staffordshire University prospectus anyway, and the overwhelming majority of full-time students there come from outside the city only to leave once they've graduated, so the place is hardly having much impact on local dole queues.
Sounds to me like you're moaning for the sake of moaning and blindly clutching at straws trying to justify it.”

“LJ, thank you for the lesson however nothing costs nothing - there are hosting costs, time to study the responses, analysis of the findings, discussions with lecturers and publishing the results; none of which is resource free - therefore cost accruing.
Secondly I question the benefit of the Culture, Media and Sport department other than to produce useless degrees to stoke up the dole queues and call centres of the country. What we need is our universities to drop these fatuous courses and promote science, engineering, languages and finance ¿ we don¿t need to waste valuable resources and raise expectations of social science students. Can we build a vibrant economy with culture media and sport ¿. Don¿t think so ¿. Uh!
Perhaps we can suggest some additional surveys to occupy their time: Are a hedgehog¿s spikes spiky? Are jellyfish made of jelly? Is the world a better place without Dickie Davies on a Saturday afternoon? Do Gary Lineaker¿s ears slow him down when riding a bike? Daddy or chips? Oh I take it all back, there are lots of future surveys for them to do ¿¿¿.uh!”

“Firstly, online surveys cost nothing to a University hosting its own website which uses students for developing pages within its own subdomain. Secondly, the global economy, regeneration opportunities, and world peace are outside the remit of the Culture Media and Sport faculty. (How do you know the relevant departments don't research and investigate those issues annually, anyway?) Thirdly, homophobia remains a serious problem in football, so any research is hardly a waste of time. Research doesn't exist to tell us what we already know after all, but to elicit all kinds of extraneous factors that may have been overlooked previously. It's hardly difficult to appreciate why this study would be of particular benefit to students in Culture, Media and Sport department. Uh.”

“Glad to see that Staffordshire University is using its power and influence to investigate worthwhile issues ! Err how much of a waste of money is this survey?? What about looking at the global economy, regeneration opportunities locally or even world peace? Nope they plumbed for the shattering research of homophobia in the population of football fans...... spectacular !!”
