FORMER pupils of a now derelict school are invited to reminisce about their younger days by looking at pictures of inside the building.

Tiffany Cartlidge, of Elliot Street, Newcastle, has many fond memories of her time at Joiners Square Primary School, but fears it could be knocked down made her want to document its last days on film.

After enlisting the help of Stoke-on-Trent City Council, the 31-year-old, who left the school in 1988, has been inside the building to capture photographs of its current condition.

Mrs Cartlidge, below, whose maiden name is Lunn, has now put the pictures up on social networking site Facebook for fellow ex-pupils to see.

She said: "I sometimes go past the old school and was upset with the way it looked from the outside because I have so many good memories of my time there.

"It has been closed for about two years now and I wanted to get some pictures of it in case it gets knocked down.

"I wasn't sure whether I'd be able to get inside because I didn't know how safe it was but I was let in every single room.

"I'm so grateful they let me in there."

The school, in Hazelhurst Street, closed in December 2006, with pupils moving to the newly-built Waterside Primary School.

The area in which the old school stands is currently undergoing regeneration work.

People walking past the school can see smashed windows and Mrs Cartlidge said it is a mess inside.

However, her pictures have been sparking memories for former pupils looking at them on Facebook.

The insurance claims adviser, who is currently on maternity leave, said: "Lots of my friends on Facebook are talking about our schooldays because of my pictures.

"They aren't just commenting on my photos but talking between themselves about what the school was like too."

She added: "Memories came back every time I stepped into a different room.

"Inside is a bit of a mess, there is damp everywhere, but considering it has been empty for so long, the rooms have done pretty well.

"It was a brilliant school with fantastic teachers.

"I was the last person to leave the class on our last day there because I was so sad to go.

"I gave birth to my baby daughter, Taylor, on October 1 and it made me think that one day she will go to school and have memories of her own.

"When she's older, I will show her the pictures of my junior school and tell her of my wonderful memories there."

“Well done Tiffany for using your initiative and recording the passing of an excellent school that has served the local children well over many years.”
