Elderly woman dies after attack at Trentham care home

A CARE home is being investigated after a 72-year-old woman died days after being assaulted by a fellow resident.

Police and social services are investigating the death of Maureen Shone after she was injured at the private Guardian Care Centre, in Trentham.

It is understood Mrs Shone was struck with a metal pole by an unnamed resident at the Longton Road home.

The mother-of-three spent two days in the University Hospital of North Staffordshire in late October before being discharged.

But Mrs Shone's condition later deteriorated and she died at the hospital 10 days later.

A post-mortem examination has failed to determine the exact cause of the OAP's death.

Now more medical tests are being carried out to see if the assault is linked to Mrs Shone's death on November 5.

Friends and relatives attended Mrs Shone's funeral at Carmountside Crematorium yesterday. Her family declined to comment on the incident.

Staffordshire Police and Stoke-on-Trent City Council are jointly investigating the incident.

Their statement says: "Officers are investigating the death of Maureen Shone, a former resident at the Guardian Care Centre in Longton Road, who passed away in hospital on November 5.

"A post-mortem examination did not establish the cause of death.

"The results of further medical tests are awaited and once these are received further action will be determined."

It is understood no-one has been arrested as part of the police investigation.

When asked about Mrs Shone's death, Guardian Care Centre director of care Rob Stanway said: "We are liaising with statutory agencies as appropriate and there is a current ongoing investigation. We are unable to comment any further."

Details of the incident were revealed at a public meeting about Stoke-on-Trent's care homes involving dozens of campaigners.

Andy Day, co-ordinator of North Staffordshire Pensioners' Convention, said: "We offer our sincere condolences to the family.

"We are reluctant to comment on the details of the case until the police and social services have completed their investigation. However, when they are completed, we will be asking how this could have been allowed to happen and what is going to be done to ensure that it never happens again – in this home or any other."
