North Staffordshire Justice Centre heard that Anderson clashed with Miss Sullivan at 5pm on January 1.

The court heard Miss Sullivan claims Anderson punched, kicked and strangled her during a prolonged and vicious assault in which she feared she was going to die.

It is claimed that Anderson only stopped beating his girlfriend of 18 months when he asked her to roll him a cigarette.

Andrew Bodger, prosecuting, said: "She says the defendant returned home drunk and in a bad mood and made various comments to her and without warning started punching her to the face and she attempted to put her hand up to stop him.

"The blows were constant and when she was on the ground he dragged her by the hair.

"He stopped to ask her to roll him a cigarette which she did.

"She started tidying up but he attacked her again and started to strangle her and she found it difficult to breath and she thought she was going to die."

Mr Bodger told the court that Anderson then reportedly slammed his victim's head against a wall and also used his knees to pin her down.

The alleged attack only came to a halt when a friend knocked at the front door.

In a statement Miss Sullivan said: "I have bruising to my left eye, swelling to the right side of my face and lumps and bumps on my head.

"I was terrified he was going to kill me."

Anderson pleaded guilty to assault when he appeared in court yesterday.

A hearing to decide whether Anderson kicked, punched and strangled Miss Sullivan will be held at North Staffordshire Justice Centre on January 31.

Mike Kimberley, defending Anderson, said: "We accept he returned home intoxicated and there was verbal communication before he slapped her across the face.

"He denies punching and kicking her."
