A DRUNK mother crashed her car into a tree as her three terrified children sat in the back.

The 33-year-old woman then left the scene of the crash and was later found hiding in a garden.

Stafford Crown Court heard that one of the children had a cut above his eye and all three were taken to hospital for a check-up.

Resident Michelle Askey, was watching television at her home in Walden Avenue when she heard the crash and went out and saw that a car had smashed into a tree.

Three children were inside crying and Mrs Askey went to help them.

"She saw the defendant alight from the vehicle and saw the children get out, in shock and great distress," said Pat Sullivan, prosecuting.

"The defendant was showing precious little regard for her children.

"Mrs Askey spoke to the defendant and she explained she didn't want anyone else involved because 'they' would take her children off her."

The defendant, who lives in Stafford and cannot be named for legal reasons, was given a suspended jail sentence yesterday.

Mr Sullivan said an Intoximeter test gave a reading of 114 microgrammes of alcohol – more than three times the legal limit of 35.

The court heard that the incident on October 7 was the woman's second drink-driving offence – she had previously been banned 10 years ago.

Mark Sheppard, defending, said the mother had sought solace in alcohol following the break-up of her marriage, but she no longer drinks.

The defendant admitted drink-driving in Walden Avenue, being drunk in charge of a child under the age of seven and failing to give her name and address following an accident.

She was sentenced to two months in jail, suspended for 18 months, and banned from driving for three years.

“You asked why the law was protecting her by not publishing her name. The law is not protecting her it is protecting the children. Her name has not been published so that people don't know who they are. I don't see how your comment follows on - I have not said that she can be trusted with her children nor that she was thinking of them when she was in the car.”

“With all repect Anon, for what she did, she sould not be trusted with the wellfair of her children. Don't think it was in the frount of her mind as she jumped out of the car and drunkenly staggered off down the road on foot. Hopefully the kids are away from her now, for the own sake, and she should be named and take the full brunt of what the public think of her. She's nowt more then bad mother and a drunken cow.”

“She hasn't been named so the children can't be identified.”

“What a horrible woman she must be to crash her car and leave her terrified children while she ran off. I only hope the authorities are keeping an eye on her and helping her poor children before the obvious happens. She should be named and shamed and tagged so she can be monitored. Disgusting!”
