A TEENAGER broke the jaw of an aggressive drunk who pushed him up against a wall in a pub, a court heard.

Jack Wright initially reacted in self-defence when he struck Jason Colclough, who had held him up against a wall.

But the 18-year-old then went too far and floored the drunk with a second blow, Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard.

Mr Colclough had drunk eight or nine pints and some shots and claimed he remembered little of the incident at The Terrace pub, Shelton.

But prosecutor Heather Chamberlin said Mr Colclough was 'not very welcome' at the pub, and had previously been barred.

Licensee Matt Bainbridge had decided to give him another chance before the incident unfolded at around 11.45pm on April 23.

Miss Chamberlin told how the landlord saw Mr Colcough holding Wright against the wall with a pool cue in one hand.

She said: "He saw Mr Colclough push the lad, who stepped backwards but then punched him. Mr Colclough started to get up and the lad punched him again and he was completely floored."

Wright the left the pub but was traced after mentioning he was a keen snooker player.

Police went to a snooker hall, where he was identified from the pub's CCTV.

Mr Colclough had to have metal plates inserted into his jaw, which was broken in two places. He also lost several teeth.

Wright, of Stanier Street, Fenton, pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Stephen Oldham, mitigating, said Wright was remorseful, and that the last six months had been 'extremely difficult' for the teenager.

He added: "He is extremely sorry for what he did."

Judge Paul Glenn called the case 'a total one off' and sentenced Wright to a 12 month community order with 100 hours unpaid work.

The judge told Wright: "You are 18-years-old and before this have been in no trouble of any type. You pleaded guilty on the basis of excessive self-defence and the Crown accept that.

"There was significant provocation in my judgement. Mr Colclough purports to have no recollection.

"But he has a history of causing trouble in this pub. On the night in question he was told he could not have any more alcohol. He was drunk, aggressive, intimidating and plainly looking for trouble.

"Your initial blow was probably justified, your second blow went too far, as you acknowledge."

The judge accepted Wright's physical prowess resulted in more damage being caused than was intended.

Judge Glenn added: "I am satisfied your remorse is completely genuine and your behaviour was not just totally out of character, there is little or no risk of you being in trouble again. It was not premeditated.

"I am not going to make any order for compensation or costs. I think it is an exceptional case."

“What a joke, the lad defended himself. Had he have let the clown get back up I guarantee he'd have kicked off again. How can the first punch be justified but the second one classed as an attack, surely the situation dictates until the aggressor is 'disarmed' in a sense, the person acting in self defence is allowed to do whatever they deem fit to protect themselves.

Another classic case of "HOW DARE YOU HIT ME, I'M SUPPOSED TO HIT YOU"”

“I agree, Mr. Wright had every right to bang the b***er out sparko. How on earth did he get to drink as much as 9 pints and other alcohol anyway, surely that's asking for problems.”

“This Colclough W###er attack Jack Wright by all accounts with a pool cue in his hand, so going by the law you are allowed to use reasonable force if you are in fear of yours or anyone else's life, so I say reasonable force was used in the circumstances”
