A MOTORIST who drove a stolen car at speeds of up to 90mph in a bid to evade police has been jailed.

Michael Caddick, pictured right, knew the Audi car was a 'bit dodgy' when he took hold of it, Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard yesterday.

The court heard it was stolen in Shelton on the afternoon of September 22.

Hours later, at 4.10am on September 23, the car was spotted in Trentham Lakes.

Prosecutor Paul Spratt said: "Police in a marked vehicle had been alerted the Audi was to be looked for.

"The officer recognised the registration plate and followed it. The defendant drove on 30mph roads at speeds of up to 90mph.

"After a chase he turned into a dead end.

"The office got out, he raised his Taser and indicated he would use it if he did not co-operate. But the defendant did co-operate and he was detained."

The Audi was returned to its owner undamaged.

Mr Spratt added that Caddick was not involved in stealing the car. He said the owner had left the keys in the ignition with his girlfriend in the passenger seat. A woman then opened the door and took a phone off the girlfriend, who got out and gave chase leaving the car unattended. A man then got in the vehicle and drove off.

Caddick, aged 32, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to handling stolen goods, dangerous driving and driving without insurance.

The court heard Caddick has a 'substantial' criminal record and has been returned to custody to complete a six-year sentence he received in 2009 for two robberies. His earliest release date is September 2015.

Jason Holt, mitigating, said Caddick accepted taking the vehicle knowing 'it was a bit dodgy'.

He added: "He was on Sir Stanley Matthews Way at 4.10am. Police describe the roads as quiet, clear and dry.

"The defendant was fully compliant when detained down a dead end."

Judge Granville Styler jailed Caddick for 16 months and banned him from driving for three years. He will have to take an extended test before he can drive again.

The judge told Caddick: "I suspect the sentence will not have any lasting effect on the length of time you spend in custody because of your recall."

Judge Styler added: "This dangerous driving was a sustained attempt to escape the police, driving at 90mph on roads with a 30mph limit."

Nearly as bad as Pulis and Crouch -his role models.... Only difference being .. THEY DON'T NEED TO STEAL A CAR TO DO IT. Our 'saintly money men'.
