BANNED driver Richard Lally was caught behind the wheel – 11 hours before the restriction was lifted.

Police caught the 33-year-old driving a car on the final day of an 18-month ban.

The defendant, who is from Stoke-on-Trent, is currently staying at a caravan site in North Wales.

And he yesterday pleaded guilty at North Staffordshire Magistrates' Court to disqualified driving and having no insurance in High Lane, Burslem, on September 4.

Peter Howland, defending, said: "The 18-month driving ban imposed on my client had nearly finished bar 11 hours. He thought it had ended.

"He is having family problems at the moment and that is why he is living in North Wales."

Lally was fined £180, with £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

The defendant had six penalty points put on his licence instead of a driving ban.

“Even though he thought it might be over he still had no insurance! What if he had knocked a pedestrian over or even had a fatal crash killing someone. No respect for the law, that should have been taken into account and should be reflected in the punishment. What a pathetic justice system we have”

“Yeah he may have been caught on the very last day but I wonder how long he'd actually been driving and not been caught?? For the last 18 months i'd suggest!”
