Dog slashed in attack - owners warn others to be on guard
THE owners of a dog which was left a bloodied mess after a suspected knife attack are warning others with pets to be on their guard.
Dan the springer spaniel suffered several slashes across the muzzle, as well as cuts to his ear and hind leg, in the incident outside his home.
Owners Brian and Kim Edmonds, of Lily Street, Wolstanton, above, are convinced the injuries were inflicted intentionally and fear the perpetrator could strike again.
Kim was at home on her own with Dan and the couple's other springer spaniel Stig when the attack happened at 12.15am on Friday.

She had left the back door open to allow the dogs into the property's secure backyard, while she listened to music in the living room.
Kim, aged 20, said: "I was listening to my MP3 player when I heard Dan whimpering from the backyard. I got up to see what was wrong and saw him walk into the house covered in blood.
"There was several deep cuts to his head, and there was a cut to his ear as well. All I could see was blood everywhere. I was panicking a bit as I tried to sort him out.
"He looked really unhappy. He kept walking in circles and collapsing, like he didn't know where he was going."
After attempting to stem the bleeding with a towel, Kim called the police and her husband, who was at work at the Pets At Home distribution centre in Trentham.
He came home and the couple took their dog to the Vets Now emergency vet in Longton.
Dan's injuries were cleaned and the cut to his leg was stitched up, and he was later prescribed antibiotics and painkillers.
Brian, aged 48, said: "The vet told us that Dan had been quite lucky, because if we hadn't brought him in he could easily have bled to death.
"The vet also said that the injuries could not have been inflicted by another animal, like a fox or a badger, as the cuts were too straight. There's a chance Dan might have got caught on something sharp, but I can't find anything like that near our house. I believe someone must have used a knife.
"Our backyard has a 6ft fence so we usually leave our back door open at night so the dogs can come in and out. I definitely left the back gate locked, but when I came home I saw it was open, so someone must have come over the fence.
"We sometimes get groups of youths drinking and smoking in the alley, but it seems this time someone's gone a bit further.
"We've talked to our neighbours about it, but nobody saw or heard anything. But now we just want other people to know that someone did this to our dog."
The couple say Dan is slowly recovering from his injuries, but they no longer leave their dogs in the backyard on their own.
A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said: "We are looking into how the dog's injuries could have been caused. We are appealing for any witnesses to come forward."

“Seen injuries like those before , when food cans have been opened roughly with can openers and the lid is incompletely detached pointing at 90 degrees to the rim of the can . The dog shoves its nose in trying to get the food at the bottom of the can , the jagged edges act as barbs and cut into the face as the dog struggles to get it off .
Could be a stanley knife wielding dog hater but the cuts are of variable length and depth , unless the muzzle cuts were made by wrapping the muzzle with wire before the cut was made between the eyes , that way the dog would not make much noise . Who ever did it will be covered in hair fibers and dna from the dog ,
An interesting case , if it is deliberate , it will be repeated in a similar form”

“I am absolutly disgusted that someone could possibly have done this. It proves to me why I favour animals lives over humans as an animal could never do anything so malicious and evil. Hope you recover soon Dan and family. Let's hope we can catch whoever's responsible. I fear for my own dog's safety now as they quite often spend time alone in my secure garden.”

“So sorry to hear about Dan's ordeal. I hope he makes a speedy recovery and that they catch the sick individual(s) who did it. There is no excuse for harming animals and I hope the culprits are caught and punished severely.”

“So Sorry to hear and see , whats has happend to Dan , and i hope he makes a full recovery springers are born with brain , and they use them , if he was a young springer then yes , he might of done it in the garden but , he is in his Mature years and not so dizzy so he wouldnt go putting his snout in a place that would injure himself , , so i have to say , IF someone did this to Dan, then , i realy hope you are haunted by what damage you have done , not only to the dog , but the people that he is loved and cared for , you really are s*** of the earth , and i hope you where seen and you are named and shamed , you should be charged with the same as if it was to a human , assult and battery, or even attemted murder,
and as the person , that says about the gate been left open , sorry when you have dogs , you thing of these thing , and you dont put a dog in the back garden , if the gate is open ,”
