Diane's rebuild puts show homes in the shade
W HEN Diane Mellor says that she has rebuilt this house from the ground up that is not strictly true – actually she has rebuilt it from beneath the ground up because it was in such a dilapidated state that even the water mains and services to the house have had to be renewed.
What she has done is nothing short of amazing and the three bedroom semi detached house at 35, Oldcott Drive, Kidsgrove, is essentially a brand new house.
Diane says: "It was a mess, just a shell with not even any water or electricity. But I have done up houses before and I love this kind of project. I had a good idea of what I could do and what I wanted and I am really pleased with the result.''
So she should be and so will the lucky buyer. Extended, modernised and finished with a deft touch this is a beautiful family home in a quiet cul-de-sac and very handy for schools, shops and with excellent road links because as she says: "We're only five minutes from the D Road.'' The entrance hall is nice and light and the laminate wood floor lends a nice sense of warmth as you first go in, something reinforced when you go though into the stunning kitchen/family room.

As she rebuilt Diane also extended at the back and part of the result is this beautiful room.
The lounge part is dominated by a brick fireplace housing a multi fuel/log burner – 'the amount of heat it gives off is wonderful'' and then you move into the kitchen area. It has light oak Shaker style cupboards, built in eye-level microwave, electric halogen hob with black chimney extractor hood over, fridge/freezer space and so on.
But what catches the eye is how dramatic this room is. Black ceramic tiles contrast with the pale furniture and the room is filled with daylight from the patio doors, generous windows overlooking the garden and a pair of velux windows in the roof. It is a stunning room.
Off it is a utility room which matches the kitchen in its cupboards, worktops and continues the black ceramic flooring which you will also find in the shower room.
The ground floor is completed by a lovely living room at the front.
Diane says: "I took the opportunity to extend the house at the back and that gave me the room to do the kitchen as I wanted and to put in the utility room and shower and have the main bathroom upstairs. It makes the house so much more suitable for a family and I think the kitchen/living room looks really spectacular.''
A solid oak staircase takes you from the living room up to the landing which is another area with plenty of daylight.
The master bedroom is at the front and has a walk in wardrobe, there is another big double at the back and then a single and there is a very modern family bathroom.
Outside, there is a big gravel area at the front which has plenty of space for a couple of cars to be parked safely off the road and at the back Diane has done the garden in a mix hard landscaping and lawn.
You step out from the patio doors in the kitchen onto a paved patio and then a couple of steps take you up to the lawn.
It is not overlooked at either the front or back really and being in a cul-de-sac there is no passing traffic so it is safe and peaceful.
Looking at the house now it is hard to imagine what a state it was in when Diane bought it.
The quality of the materials, the workmanship and the skill in the design is obvious to anyone and is a credit to her.
Honestly, I have been in show homes which are not as nicely done as her home.
She is justifiably proud of her work and says: "Everyone who comes here says how cosy it is, how nice it is and they say that they would like this feature or that one in their own home.''
Whoever buys this house, and I cannot imagine it being on the market for long, will be getting a bargain because to all intents and purposes it is a brand new, high end and luxury family home.
You really do have to see it.
