CHANGING: Demolition work has started on an old college building to make way for a Sainsbury's supermarket which will create about 150 jobs.

Contractors for Sainsbury's have moved on to the site in Liverpool Road, Newcastle.

The store is being built on the former Newcastle College site after it opened an expanded college in Knutton Lane in January.

Once demolition is complete, work will then begin on building the Sainsbury's food store.

The existing Sainsbury's, on Ryecroft, Newcastle, will continue trading until the replacement store is completed towards the end of this year.

The development will include a larger Sainsbury's store with a customer café, TU clothing range and other home wares, as well as a petrol station and about 500 car parking spaces.

Improvements will also be made to roads and pedestrian links to the town.
