Demand for action over danger dogs
DEMANDS are growing for stricter controls on dogs in a popular park after a woman was attacked as she tried to rescue her pet.
The woman suffered a hand injury in the incident in Brough Park, Leek, at midday last Thursday.
-

She was confronted by one black and one brindle-coloured Staffordshire bull terrier running free as she walked her Jack Russell.
Last year a nine-month-old Jack Russell puppy suffered three puncture wounds in its neck after it was pounced on by an alsatian.
Eileen Murfin, secretary of the Friends of Brough Park, said by-laws governing the park may have to be reviewed.
She said: "We like dog walkers to enjoy the park. We have a good relationship with them.
"But if the by-laws are out-of-date we will have to approach the council to look at them.
"Anything which deters people from using the park is of concern to us."
A spokesman from Staffordshire Moorlands District Council said: "We have a published dog walkers' code of conduct, which is available on the website and at our offices. This gives guidelines to keeping dogs under close control."
Police are appealing for witnesses after Thursday's attack.
A spokesman said: "The woman involved in Thursday's incident attempted to shoo the dogs away but they continued to harass her dog. She picked her dog up to protect it and the black Staffordshire bull terrier jumped up and bit her on her right hand."
The woman was treated at hospital for minor injuries.
Anyone with information should contact PC David Cruxton at Leek Police Station on 0300 1234455 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

“Staffies love people, soft as snow with them, there problem is they are a powerfull dog and what might seem like playing to them is out and out fighting to meny other dogs, they need, as all dogs, to be kept on a lead at all times, and walked by a person who can control the dog. Dew to ill health, I can know longer walk my staffie, my wife has to take her, I'm with them, but I never take the lead, I would not be in control, I would not have the power anymore.”

“I own a 5month old staffie, who i felt it would be important to socialize with other dogs as soon as vaccinations would allow, as a result, he is well behaved with all types and sizes of dog, even when put in his place by a more dominant dog. He is only ever introduced to strange dogs when on a lead - and with the permission of the owner. As a result, he is calm, happy and has never shown any agression, instead wanting to play - he will share a dogs' toys and regulary meets up with dogs he's met on walks. He has also been introduced to all ages of children, who he behaves well with, and plays gentler than he would with toys. However i would never leave any breed of dog alone with a child unsupervised, however much i trusted them.
I for one have been training him following cesar millan's (dog whisperer) training methods, and have found them to be effective in tackling an exuberant young over-excited dog, to correcting unwanted behaviour such as chewing and mouthing due to teething. I would not hesitate to introduce him to anyone as he has even been excellent when greeting a disablesd stranger in a wheelchair, proving gentle and less excitable than normal.
As i believe that what you put into your dog, you more than get back, i now own a happy, contented, well behaved staffie, who has a growing army of fans, formed by everyone he meets - many ask about him if they see either myself or my partner and he is not with us!!! - all regulary comment at how well behaved he is, and many do not believe his age. STAFFIES AND SIMILAR BREEDS ARE NOT BAD - ITS HOW THEY ARE TREATED AND TRAINED!
Coincidently, i regulary exercise him off the lead, but am careful to put him back on or catch him up for cyclists, pushchairs, young children/people who dont like or have a fear of dogs, or if any distraction to which he may give chase - he doesn't bother with cats. I exercise caution, and assess each situation and state of mind in my dog individually. This is the least that i owe my dog, to be a responsible owner, so that he can have all of his needs met, to ensure he remains a happy, contented dog.
As i write this he is happily sleeping after a long walk to drain any excess energy - this i believe frustates him if not drained and soon manifests itself in naughty behaviour - walk your dog, he will be more content and easier to control.”

“Staffordshire Bull Terriers appear to be the latest must have fashion accessory for chavs. I really don't know why people let them off their lead because they are dangerous when around other dogs.”

“WHY IS IT THESE STORIES ALWAYS FOCUS ON THE DOG BEHAVING BADLY? I HAD A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE....I TOO HAVE A JACK RUSSELL AND HE IS A BIT TOO BIG FOR HIS BOOTS AND ONCE THIS HUGE BOXER WAS HAVING NONE OF IT AND PULLED ITS OWNER OVER AND POUNCED ON MY DOG......THE REASON MY DOG WAS TOO BOSSY FOR HIS OWN GOOD AND THE OWNER OF THE BOXER WAS TOO WEAK TO RESTRAIN IT.....MY DOG IS FINE BY THE WAY.....BUT LETS NOT ALWAYS BLAME THE DOGS. ME AND THE BOXER OWNER ARE VERY RESPONSIBLE PEOPLE WITH OUR DOGS ON LEADS BUT SOMETIMES THESE INCIDENTS HAPPEN DUE TO ANIMAL INSTINCT AND BEHAVIOR.......LETS JUST BE SENSIBLE AND NOT CALL FOR A DOG TO BE SHOT AS SOON AS ITS BIT SOMEONE.....THE PROBLEM IS THE OWNERS WHO BEAT THEIR DOGS TO MAKE THEM AGGRESSIVE. THERE IS NO DETERRENT FOR SUCH BAD OWNERS......JAIL SENTENCES NEED DISHING OUT.”
