SMELLS: We read with interest your article 'Neighbours will kick up stink about landfill site', (Sentinel, March 1) about 'smells' at Walley's quarry in Thistleberry.
We are amused two people featured in the photograph are part of a liaison group set up to work alongside all the partners involved in raising and solving problems associated with this site.
All three councillors in Thistleberry are often in contact with the Environment Agency, the quarry management and Newcastle Borough Council officers to raise concerns on behalf of 'residents'. We too want to get rid of the smell once and for all as we too are experiencing the problem.
Obviously the councillors for Silverdale pictured in your article have short memories, because at the last meeting of the liaison committee held only a couple of weeks ago, we were given a firm reassurance that an audit of the site by the Environment Agency was taking place imminently and the findings of that report in relation to the smell and possible solutions would be made public.
Lafarge, the site operators are as keen as we are to find a solution and will implement whatever is needed to solve the problem. We as councillors for the area will keep them to their word.
Come on Silverdale councillors admit it, this article was about elections in May – you know what was discussed at the last meeting perhaps you need to let your residents know too.
As councillors for the area where the quarry is situated, please let us know your concerns, but more importantly ring directly to report incidents on 0800 807060 or 742571. You can also visit the site to discuss your concerns with the site manager.
