A DECISION to award the tender to demolish a historic hospital building has been called in by councillors.

London-based Brown and Mason Demolition Contractors was awarded the contract for the former Westcliffe Hospital site, in Chell, at a meeting of Stoke-on-Trent City Council's cabinet earlier this month.

Councillors Geoff Knight, Peter Kent-Baguley and Ann James called it in, with concern about the consultation and that relevant information and a viable alternative were not considered.

Members of the council's improving communities scrutiny committee will meet on Thursday to discuss it.

“Improving communities scrutiny comminttee, there answer to evrything is to knock it down, when are they going to build something that will really benefit the community. Like a place of work, those things we used to have called factories, call centres etc. These scrutiny committees can't see past the state & benefit culture, Bentilee is great for your Council Tax claims, CAB, prescriptions, these committees can't see past a benefits life, when most would love a change & a chance to work.”
