MARK Grew insists he was not jealous of League Two’s wheelers and dealers as the summer transfer window closed last night.

Vale have their hands tied until they find a new owner as manager Micky Adams has already registered the maximum 20 players allowed for a club in administration.

Other clubs in the basement division have been busy, with York signing centre-half Clarke Carlisle, striker Scott Dobie and defender Charlie Taylor on loan.

Oxford have taken Arsenal defender Daniel Boateng until January, while Wycombe have brought in striker Jo Kuffour.

Vale might have dabbled in the loan market themselves if their situation had allowed.

But assistant boss Grew said: “I would rather have 20 players with a great spirit than 24 where the squad is filled out with perhaps not so much quality.

“We are very happy with the players that are here, and as long as we do not pick up too many injuries along the way then we look as strong as any other team in this division.”

At the moment, Adams has a full squad to choose from apart from long-term absentee Lewis Haldane (leg and ankle).

But perhaps with a nod to Clayton McDonald’s caution for unsporting behaviour late in the first half at Morecambe last weekend, Grew warned of the perils of suspensions.

He said: “There will come a point when players will be suspended this season, and to a certain extent yellow cards are sometimes unavoidable.

“What we don’t want to see though are silly bookings. You are not going to agree with referees all the time, but we know they are going to be strict about certain things this term.

“We have been told that officials will be strict if players are running away with the ball to stop a throw-in being taken, for example, so we have to cut it out. We have to be disciplined.”

Adams has been able to name a settled team so far this season and has been rewarded with three decent performances, albeit that only two ended in victory.

Grew said: “We probably should have at least seven points rather than six at this stage because we were disappointed not to take something from the Accrington game.

“This is going to be a very tight division again this season. There are going to be games when it doesn’t quite fall your way but every point is important.

“Torquay have been unfortunate not to have won promotion in the past two seasons so they will provide a real test for us today. They are strong, but play good football. But we are looking forward to the game and want to pick up another home win.”
