Davis calls on Crewe Alexandra to up the ante in race for League One play-offs
TASKMASTER Steve Davis has ordered Crewe to up their game if they are to stand any chance of making the League One top six.
The Alex visit play-off rivals Notts County today (3pm) knowing a win could lift the team from 12th into ninth and within two points of sixth-placed Sheffield United.
However, Crewe manager Davis insists they will not repeat last season's heroic late push into the promotion picture unless improvements are made.
He said: "There's a cluster of teams in the same situation as us, six or seven chasing the last two spots.
"While there are so many points to be played for, there is hope for us all. But we've got to be at our best. We need to start performing better than we have been doing. We are not playing well."
Crewe have won three of their last four games in all competitions – including a 3-0 victory at Coventry in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy area final first leg on Tuesday – and won seven of the last 11.
Davis said: "We are picking up results. We are not giving away a lot at the back Bournemouth apart, although they got two penalties which should not have been given.
"We're keeping games very tight, but the players can perform much better than they have been doing. That's down to individuals starting to play like we know they can.
"When we watch them in training they perform very well with no pressure. They've got to transfer that to the pitch. Not enough have been doing that on a regular basis.
"If performances are better it gives us a better chance of picking up the number of wins we need to take us up the table."
Centre-back Harry Davis (toe) is fit again and forward Mathias Pogba is available after making his international debut for Guinea against Senegal, in Paris, on Tuesday.
