A WOMAN whose father survived 12 heart attacks is taking part in the British Heart Foundation's High Peak Winter Trail Challenge.

Debbie Byrne, aged 48, from The Westlands, Newcastle, felt inspired to take on the 17 mile hike, as her father suffered from heart disease and survived many heart attacks before passing away in 2002.

Debbie, who participated in British Heart Foundation (BHF) events as a child, was also determined to sign up to the event, after watching her daughter, Katy, aged 21, complete a charity run earlier in the year.

Debbie said: "I realised it is never too late to get involved and make a difference. I will be walking with my daughter and would recommend the High Peak Challenge to all ages.

"I really hope other people will join me at this event and support the work of the British Heart Foundation. They are there to help when faced with difficult times and uncertainty, when having to deal with heart disease and its consequences."

Entries are now being taken for the event on Sunday, November 22. The challenge covers 17 miles through the Peak District. This year sees a change to the normal route; walkers will board a free bus at Cromford Meadows, where they will travel to Hurdlow and begin the walk. Travelling in the opposite direction to previous years, this route provides views of the Derbyshire countryside, including the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage site.

Daniel Routt, BHF regional events organiser, said: "I would like to wish Debbie and Katy the best of luck for the challenge and thank them for supporting the event."

All participants will receive a free event hat to help keep off the winter chill. Entry for the event is £10 for adults and £5 for children (aged 16 years or under).
