Mr Derbyshire's neighbours in Brindley Crescent say they were shocked to hear about his death. A number of them would often see him going out on his bike.

Francis Bloor, aged 83, said: "Paul was bike mad. He lived for his bike.

"He would go to work on his bike with a little light flashing on the back.

"The only comforting thing about his death is he died doing what he liked best."

She added: "I remember him coming to live on the street, it must have been about 10 years ago.

"He was always pleasant and polite. He had just had his house done up with new windows and guttering. It's very sad."

Fellow neighbour Sarah Byatt, aged 27, said: "I didn't know him very well but I would take parcels in for him sometimes while he was out.

"They were always something to do with his bike.

"Paul was a quiet man and kept himself to himself but he always seemed lovely when I spoke to him."

Roger Holdcroft, aged 64, said the whole village was shocked when they heard the news. He added: "I found out on the Monday morning, it's very sad. I didn't see much of him because he was at work a lot but he was a nice chap."

The accident happened on the road that passes under the A50 flyover.

Mr Derbyshire was taken to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire but died from his injuries.

Officers are appealing for these drivers or anyone else who witnessed the incident, to contact Staffordshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 368 of March 25.
