Cycling: Milward saves her best until last to claim track victory

RISING star Paige Milward produced a superb last lap to steal victory in the Brooks Cycles Track League.

The 14-year-old (Lyme RC) caught Bernard Swinnerton in the dying stages of the B Class Devil at Lyme Valley Stadium and took the win on the line.

Swinnerton had the consolation of winning the B Class Course De Primes.

Lyme's Sallie Birchall, aged 14, won the Youth Scratch and Youth Devil events and is now preparing to move up to compete in the B Class competition.

James Duncalf (Lyme) held on to win the 1km block handicap from his club-mates Bradley Hill and Megan Williams.

The trio had all impressed in the Freewheelers League last year and have now moved up to the main league, where they are more than holding their own against experienced riders.

Some of the country's hottest prospects competed in the A Class competition, and Manchester's Ryan Whatmough is already opening up a gap at the top.

The 16-year-old won the 10-lap scratch, devil, and 10-mile scratch, as well as being a member of the winning team pursuit line-up.

Bolton-based youth international Matt Rotherham showed his class in the sprint events.

He won the two-up time trial with his brother, Tom, the keirin final, and was a member of the winning sprint team.
