By Stoke-on-Trent City Council.

The first in a series of music concerts across the West Midlands launching the start of the official Cultural Olympiad will take place next month in Stoke-on-Trent.

The concert, entitled An American Adventure, will star the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and take place at the Victoria Hall in the City Centre on Friday March 2, 2012. It is the first of six concerts taking place in the region to form part of the Music Nation weekend.

Music Nation is a weekend of live music devised and led by the BBC and the first nationwide countdown event for the London 2012 Festival. Music Nation is an unprecedented collaboration of the UK's orchestral and music-making communities. It is the first major Cultural Olympiad event of 2012.

The concert will star Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii who will perform Chopin's Piano Concert No.1, in a delightful programme of American-influenced music.

Councillor Mark Meredith, cabinet member for economic development, said: "The final build up to this year's Olympic Games is getting underway and this is the first of a really exciting period for the city. I hope the concert gets a great turnout as it is set to be a spectacular musical experience."

The concert starts at 8pm and tickets cost between £13.50 and £29.50.The performance will also be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 on Saturday March 3, 2012 at 3pm.

“I'm green with envy. Makes my billiards nights at the Conservative Club look very passe. Mind you I can do without the Lucky Seven adventures, after I once sat on a kebab that some thoughtful person had left on the back seat. It took months to get the chilli sauce stains out of my trousers.”

“Mr Wivens, how on earth did you find out about my T'Pau habit? And, what a coincidence you wearing the same underwear. Haven't heard much recently about the Pig Pen but assuming it's still open I will certainly be snugbound on opening night. A few beers, a listen to Nobby, a chunky chicken supper, followed by a Lucky Seven mystery tour. What a night, eh?”

“I don't mind where she goes as long as it's not in Burton Stores again. Costs me a fortune every time she's out for the night! Don't know what I'm going to do with all these bl**dy dryers.

I shall be having a very nice evening thank you, with or without the memsahib. And I always wear my damarts on a night out in Hanley, it gets bitter up John Street.”

“Let's hope E D Wivens wears a big coat on the night. He's going to be cold sitting in that great big Vic Hall on his lonesome. You see, someone tells me Mrs W is off to bingo...oops, sorry that was privileged information...aaagh too late...pressed the submit key...”

“it's called "American Adventure" because two of the composers being showcased were American, and the works being performed are quintessentially American. I dare someone at the BBC thought it was an amusing pun. It's the Copland I shall be going for anyway. I would have preferred Charles Ives to Bernstein myself.

Alberus and yamerama - maybe Gary will open the windows in the pigpen snug for you so you can have a listen? That way you can be edified without having to stick your hands in your wallets, except when that dodgy bloke comes around with the cheap hand-dryers and candles. Or maybe it's best you both stick to Smash Hits of the '80s on the karaoke. Gary tells me the two of you do a smashing T'Pau when you've had a skinful.”

“Truly admirable that Nobuyuki Tsujii should step in and fill the artistic void left by Chaz & Dave's retirement.
Will the council use the bus lane camera car to take the publicity pictures now the Huntbach St fine mine's gone?”

“Oh I do agree. The "Woodcutters Chorus" by Chopin is a delight, a veritable cornucopia of indefatigable tumultuousness. As for that Hovis tune by thingy...well words fail me...”

“Speak for yourself lads, I for one shall be going (and Mrs Wivens as well, that's two) - I'm well into Copland, Appalachian Spring is wonderful (google "Simple Gifts" and you'll recognise it straight away) and you can't go wrong with Dvorak and Chopin. Not too keen on Bernstein meself but the wife likes his stuff. The price is fair enough too for a performance of this quality, I'd pay double that to see Nobuyuki Tsujii.”

“Ha ha nice one Alberus. Tickets £13.50 and £29.50... they're having a laugh... we're all skint. I love the Kensington-on-Trent thing. I don't know many/if anyone around here that could care less about the Olympics. We're skint, our kids are skint and our Council has just sold us down the Trent.”
