Crews called to sewage works

WORKERS were evacuated from a sewage treatment works after smoke billowed into corridors.

Staffordshire Fire Service sent two pumps, from Longton and Newcastle, to the incident at Strongford Sewage Treatment Works, on Barlaston Old Road, Barlaston, at about 1.45pm.

A fire service spokesman said: "Staff had been evacuated.

"On arrival, smoke filled corridors, but it was not at first obvious where it was coming from.

"A storage heater had a small fire, but it was out on arrival.

"It had been started accidentally."

Firefighters remained on the scene, making sure the area was safe and ventilating the building.

Crews left the scene at 3.05pm.
