A CREWE SAS sniper who was jailed for illegally possessing a 'war trophy' pistol has today had his conviction overturned
Sergeant Danny Nightingale was sentenced to 18 months detention in November by a judge sitting in a military court after he admitted possessing a Glock 9mm pistol and more than 300 rounds of ammunition.

This was later reduced to a suspended sentence after an appeal at the Court Martial Appeal Court in London before today's decision to overturn the original conviction.
Sgt Nightingale, who said he was given the gun as a present while serving in Iraq, will now face a retrial.

“Someone who was a grateful mate from Afghanistan gave him 900 rounds of ammunition and a Glock? And he was unaware it was in his kit when it came home? Some of us are gullible, some of us are naive, but come on this guy got caught bringing home a weapon, that is against the law, he stated he was going to de-commission it, to me that says he knew he had it. A member of the SAS , well only if it stands for Stupid and Silly, he got what he deserved, and as a member of the stupid and silly brigade I doubt a career in the Army is in the offing.
Good job he did`nt go to Belfast, and now his mush has been paraded in all the papers and the TV I think a civilian job would be more fitting, perhaps IDIOCY avoidance counselling.”

“I'll bet Danny is glad he didn't take a few points ten years ago for someone else.
He would have REALLY been in trouble there.”

“Maybe he should have gone the whole hog has he apparently has so many peoples sympathies...a bazooka under the stairs and a box of grenades in the fridge....and how about a tank in the garage.”

“The man had a lethal weapon in his home....a glock with 900 rounds of ammunition its not a flippin' pea shooter for god sake - the man deserves a kick up the backside for a total lack of common sense...”

“A bit of common sense should have been applied and it wouldn't have got this far and saved a lot of money.
He should have just had the gun and ammunition taken off him and put him in the glass house for a couple of weeks.
It seems strange that we expect our soldiers to do things that the majority of the population can't even grasp the concept of, and then villify them for the job they do. We have home grown criminals and foreign criminals who get treated better and given more help than our sometimes mentally and physically scarred soldiers.
This was all done for political reasons and its just a shame that those same people who chose this route are unable to put their views to use and jail the real criminals.”
