NATHAN Ellington scored his third goal in as many games for Crewe's development side as he bids for a contract with the Alex.

The 31-year-old was an overage player in a strong Alex under-21 side which drew 1-1 with Wigan Athletic this afternoon.

Manager Steve Davis says he has no doubts about the striker's goalscoring ability, but he must prove his fitness to win a place at Gresty Road.

Davis said: "He is continuing with his fitness and getting some games. We haven't committed ourselves to anything.

"He is enjoying it here; he likes the lads and the club and the environment and if he hadn't have done I'm sure he would have gone by now.

"I think he's got interest from other clubs but he's happy while he's here to wait for our decision and at some point we'll make a call either way.

"He's a great finisher. It's ok doing it in practice, it's having the energy to get into the right places to do it in games.

"The games with the under-21s will only benefit him."

Matt Tootle and Max Clayton also played this afternoon, as the Alex prepare for a League One trip to Hartlepool tomorrow.
