Crewe Alexandra: Time for Mathias Pogba to step up as Bolton Wanderers come to town
CREWE assistant boss Neil Baker can't wait to see Mathias Pogba take a step up in class after a storming start to his Alex career.
The striker blasted a second-half hat-trick against Pewsey Vale on Thursday, taking his pre-season tally to seven goals after strikes against Congleton, Quorn, Leek Town and Bashley.
Baker says the 21-year-old has made an excellent impression since joining the club from Wrexham for a nominal fee earlier this month.
However, Baker warned a tougher test awaits when Crewe entertain Bolton Wanderers today (3pm).
He said: "He couldn't have had a better start. He's scored in every game he has played.
"He has played a lot of his football on the wing at Wrexham, but we haven't played him there because we want him playing through the middle.
"He's got qualities we haven't had for a good while. He's a big, strong, powerful lad and quick, so he gives us a different option.
"He's not quite like Dele Adebola because he doesn't play with his back to goal.
"He likes to run in behind, which is what we want.
"But how will he handle the step up? That's something we will find out.
"We have only played non-league sides to date so we will know a bit more over these next few fixtures against Bolton, Huddersfield, (next Wednesday) and Barnsley (Tuesday, August 7)."
The Alex have spent the week in Wiltshire at Tidworth Army Barracks. Baker says the experience has been about far more than their wins over Bashley (2-0) and Pewsey (5-0).
He said: "It was a good experience for them to see how the other half lives."
