"I thought we were flat, especially in the first half, but I was able to bring on the right players at the right time.
"I thought Chuks could give us a killer pass in the final third and Max got us ahead with a great header.
"They changed the game and gave us the little bit of spark that we needed."
Crewe have only reached the final four of the Football League Trophy on one previous occasion, being knocked out by Doncaster Rovers in 2007.
Davis said: "It's a competition I've always wanted to do well in. We look forward to the games against Coventry and hope we can reach Wembley."
