MATHIAS Pogba is aiming to become the first player to score 20 goals in a debut season at Crewe for 45 years.

The 22-year-old, who arrived from Wrexham last summer, has made an easy transition from Conference football to League One.

  1. Mathias Pogba has already scored 14 times in his first season at Crewe Alexandra.

And the Guinea international, left, scored his 14th of the campaign in a 2-1 win at Colchester last weekend, leaving him 12 games to hit his pre-season target.

No Crewe new boy has reached that landmark in his inaugural campaign since Gary Talbot netted 25 in 1967/68.

"I set an objective when I signed to score 20 goals this season and that remains my target," said Pogba.

"I have 14 goals already, but I will keep going until the last whistle of the last game."

“Further to the comments on this thread, I have realised that Terry Harkin scored 35 goals in his one and only season, back in 1964-65. Harkin holds the club record for the most goals scored over a season Our man Pogba will never beat that target now.”

“No I was not at that match, Pete. That was an interesting statistic that you mentioned. This led me to researching more about the prolific scoring record of Gary Talbot. From Wiki:

"The 1964–65 season saw Chester score 141 goals in Division Four, FA Cup and Football League Cup, with Talbot and fellow forwards Jimmy Humes, Mike Metcalf, Elfed Morris and Hugh Ryden all netting at least 20 goals. Talbot bagged 35 of them (28 in the league), including a hat-trick in two minutes and 57 seconds in the closing stages of an FA Cup 5-0 derby win over Crewe.

Talbot left in 1969, as Chester's record Football League goalscorer (previously held by Frank Wrightson) with 83 goals, and it was not until September 1992 that Stuart Rimmer would pass the total."

This was from a player who combined his football with professional photography.”

“Thanks Mick, I'll check my adding up.

Were you there when Talbot scored a three-minute hat-trick against Crewe, for Chester?”

“Gary Talbot actually scored 20 goals during his only season with the Alex. His last strike came on the final day of the season, when Crewe clinched promotion with their victory over Luton Town at Gresty Road, on May 4th 1968. I actually attended this match.”
